Our fellowships

Two ways to work on AI safety and governance. Open to Northwestern students across disciplines.

Choose your focus

Technical FellowshipA sprint to the state of the art.

Get up to speed on current AI safety research and the methods behind it. Work through the foundations, then dig into state-of-the-art approaches through papers and hands-on exercises.

What you'll work on

Understanding how methods work, implementing key ideas, and evaluating what the results actually show. The focus is on building the technical fluency to engage with current research.

What to bring

An interest in working with models and code, and a willingness to move quickly through unfamiliar material. You don't need to arrive as an AI safety researcher.

Governance FellowshipReal issues. Actions you can take.

Examine concrete problems in how AI is developed, deployed, and governed. Work out who makes the decisions, what could change, and where you can contribute.

What you'll work on

Turn an issue into a practical next step. That could mean drafting a policy brief, assessing a university's AI practices, or developing a proposal for a specific decision-maker. The emphasis is on actions you can explain and carry forward.

What to bring

An interest in real institutions and the people affected by their decisions. No prior policy or machine-learning background is required.
